The Diplomat Season 2 ended with bombshell after bombshell.
Turns out that Vice President Grace Penn (Allison Janney) was behind the attack on the British warship HMS Courageous. Upon learning this catastrophic news, President William Ryaburn (Michael McKean) straight-up died, leaving Grace to become President of the United States.
So where does that leave Kate Wyler (Keri Russell) and her husband Hal (Rufus Sewell)?
By the looks of The Diplomat Season 3’s first teaser, still very much in the thick of the show’s international intrigue. According to Netflix’s official Season 3 synopsis:
In season three of The Diplomat, Ambassador Kate Wyler lives the particular nightmare that is getting what you want. She just accused Vice President Grace Penn of hatching a terrorist plot and admitted she’s after the VP’s job. But now the president is dead, Kate’s husband Hal may have inadvertently killed him, and Grace Penn is leader of the free world. None of this slows Hal’s campaign to land Kate the vice presidency. Kate steps into a role she never wanted, with a freedom she never expected, an increasingly complicated friendship with Foreign Secretary Austin Dennison (David Gyasi) and an unnerving bond with first gentleman Todd Penn.
Todd Penn is played by none other than Bradley Whitford, marking a major West Wing reunion between him, Janney, and The Diplomat creator Debora Cahn, who worked on The West Wing‘s later seasons.
To catch Janney and Whitford in action again, and to see what’s next for Kate, check out the full teaser above.
The Diplomat also stars Ali Ahn, Rory Kinnear, and Ato Essandoh.
The Diplomat Season 3 premieres this Fall on Netflix.
