Star Atlas Launch Free-to-Play Browser Game Holosim

by Adrian Russell

Web3 strategy MMO Star Atlas have launched Holosim – a free-to-play version of their popular SAGE Labs browser game – as a testbed for new features.

Making its test phase debut on June 4, the gameplay is identical to SAGE Labs – side with a faction, manage your fleet and complete contracts to dominate the stars – albeit without any Web3 features. This gives brand-new players a way to try out the game for free before heading into the true experience, and gives current players a taste for what features will hit the main game in the near future.

In-development features that are currently live in Holosim include a combat update, the SAGE AI assistant, a questing system and much more.

What is Star Atlas?

Star Atlas is an upcoming grand strategy MMO Web3 game, built on Solana, with a pre-alpha available on PC via the Epic Games Store for key holders.

Inspired by the likes of EVE Online and Star Citizen, players build fleets of space-faring ships and assemble crews to journey across the stars, exploring planets, mining resources and crafting an array of items and structures.

Holosim is a brand-new free-to-play Web2 version of their popular Web3 SAGE Labs browser title that serves as a companion to the main game. Players side with one of three factions to complete contracts and aid in the conquest of the galaxy.

The Star Atlas ecosystem has a community-driven economy at its core. Star Atlas uses Solana as the backbone of this ecosystem, designed by real economists, and driven by the $ATLAS token. As of writing, $ATLAS has a market cap of over $21 million USD, with a fully-diluted value of more than $43.3 million.

What can I expect in Holosim?

Not only is Holosim a way for new players to get a free taste of the Star Atlas experience – it is also a testing ground for new features, with the aim to fine-tune these ideas before adding them into SAGE Labs.

Five key features are currently in-development within Holosim:

  • Combat update: players can now jump into combat and engage their opponents in battle – and right now, any ships you lose are lost forever
  • Questing system: provides players with new daily missions, storyline quests and additional tasks with varied rewards
  • SAGE AI assistant: gives assistance on any and all aspects of Star Atlas – ideal for new players
  • Route manager: automation tools that streamline fleet management, making the game quicker, simpler and easier to control
  • New tutorial: allows new players to get up to speed with the world of Star Atlas, and the core game mechanics

As time goes on, more experimental features will be added to Holosim prior to a release on SAGE Labs. As of writing, we’ve yet to see an ETA for when some of these in-development features could hit the main game.
